Poseidon and Persephone
This is the 2 of Water in Lane's Greenwitch Tarot:
The Lovers of the Water suit. A mating of opposites: Poseidon (Greek God of the Sea) with Persephone (daughter of Demeter, Goddess of Grains and often Mother Earth herself). The patriarchal story is that Persephone was abducted and raped by Hades, God of the Underworld. I prefer to think she went gladly and was treated beautifully in the winter’s dark, returning topside each year to bring Spring and Summer to Earthlings. Yet here she is being loved by Water. They lie on a bed of fiery passion with trees all around them. Making a new human? A being appropriate to this New Age of Aquarius?
Can you retell the stories both personal and collective? Allow watery feelings and insight to guide you. What would it feel like to make love to the God of the Sea?! What creation is being sparked inside you right now? Are you becoming a new breed of human?
Journal October 2003
Done the day after the inspiring painting session with Barbara McLaughlin. Is this Poseidon, God of the Sea? Or Hades, Poseidon’s brother, King of the Underworld, also known as Pluto? It has always seemed to me that Persephone came to love the Underworld and its riches. But this figure has the tail of the mermaid so it seems like he comes from the sea. She is definitely of the earth. There’s fire in their bed. Does it come from him or her – or both? The setting is like our own clearing here on Neahkahnie Mountain as we first found it. And, of course, I think of this as Tom and I, passionate and of the elements.
